The regulator has a key role to play in ensuring
- better reporting of work-related stress, depression and anxiety, to identify root and underlying causes
- businesses are aware of and able to support preventative actions and stop incidents in the first place.
To deliver the required action and objective of its strategy, HSE funding and resources must be adequate.
Action must address capacity-building for psychosocial risk management which can reduce the incidence of work-related mental health conditions. Examples include organisational interventions to reshape working conditions, cultures and relationships.17
Employers also have a vital role to play in helping to mitigate and manage the prevalence of work-related stress, depression and anxiety. Among the actions they can take are:
- preventing work-related causes of mental health problems
- supporting workers with existing conditions
- promoting good mental health.
There are also significant roles for governments and OSH professionals to play in supporting employers and their staff to create a positive working environment.
The OSH Alliance will seek to achieve the following calls to action by 2030, working with a range of stakeholders and agencies.
Our goal by 2030 is to support the HSE’s strategic objective to reduce work-related ill health, with a specific focus on mental health and stress.
